If you’re struggling to tap into the digital age, you’re not alone.
While some savvy seniors have mastered technology, for others it can be pretty tough to navigate.
But there is help out there, you just need to know where to find it.
Mobile phones, smart TVs, Tablets, Google Home.
It’s a hi-tech world changing the way we live. But for some it’s hard to keep up.
Newstead, Queensland resident Ian McPherson said he uses an android phone.
“And I guess my family think I’m a bit of a dinosaur having something like that,” he joked.
He never imagined he’d be mastering mod cons in retirement.
But thanks to his own Technology Angel he’s navigating the online world whenever he needs.
The service is the brainchild of aged-care giant Aveo it’s retirement living of the future – at their brand new Newstead site.
Digital services manager Sahim Spencer said the tech angel is there to help all seniors.
“It helps them connect with those technologies,” he said.
“And the tech bar is where they can go to get that support.”
Digital troubleshooting is their specialty – they can also get your gadgets going for free.
“From laptops, computers, printers, phones and setting up their Wifi,” technical advisor Darren Larson said.
If you don’t have the benefit of an instant tech-angel, Telstra has its tech savvy seniors program.
“It gives them tips and tricks on how they can set up email, simple things like how they can send a photo to one of their loved ones,” Darren Clarke from Telstra said.
“All those things, they need to be able to stay connected.”
You can find the free courses in libraries, there’s also an easy to navigate web page – teaching you everything from extending the ring time of your phones, storing memories on the cloud, setting up streaming on your smart TV, even finding those emails you thought you’d lost forever.
“I think the key is don’t be shy, give it a go, there’s some great tips online and I think you’ll probably surprise yourself,” Mr Clarke added.
