Sonu Sood responds to netizens who raised suspicion over his philanthropic work, called it a PR gig. Mirror Online / Updated: Oct 26, 2020, 11:29 IST.
Sonu Sood has become a messiah for hundreds of migrant workers, students and every other distressed person who has approached him for help ever since the nation went into lockdown owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sonu has left no stone unturned in forwarding a helping hand to those who needed him the most amid the crisis.

However, a recent tweet by the actor has led some netizens to believe that his work during the pandemic is only a PR gig of his team.

On Sunday, Sonu responded to a Twitter user’s cry for help as his son had to undergo an open heart surgery.

Responding to the tweet, Sonu tweeted, “Tomorrow your son will be admitted to SRCC Hospital Mumbai. Surgery will be scheduled this week.”

However, some netizens raised a suspicion as Sonu’s official Twitter handle wasn’t tagged nor did the user mention her location. Besides, netizens pointed out that the account was created in October and has only one tweet and the user had only 2-3 followers.

After receiving backlash on Twitter, Sonu responded to one of the users who had slammed the actor and said that he finds the needy and somehow even they manage to find him.

“That’s the best part brother. I find a needy & they somehow find me. It’s about INTENTIONS, but u won’t understand. Tom patient will be in SRCC Hospital kindly do ur bit. Send some fruits for him. Someone with 2-3 followers will be happy to get some love from a man with followers,” he wrote.

Defending his actions, Sonu also shared excel sheets and other documents showing he reached out to the user.

On Saturday, Sonu shared a picture of the letters he receives on an everyday basis. Along with it, he wrote, “HELP” mails that I receive every day. I wish I could reach out to everyone, which looks impossible. Will wait for the day when these letters will reduce in numbers and we will have more prosperity everywhere.”

In September, Sonu was conferred with the coveted SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for his philanthropic work.

On receiving the award, Sood had said, “I have done whatever little I have done, in my own humble way, for my fellow countrymen without any expectations. However, to be recognised and awarded feels good.”

Philanthropic acts

Uchemba once berated Nigerian celebrities for showing off online and not giving back to the people (fans) that helped them achieve greatness.

In one of his statements captured on his Instagram page, he explains why he needs to be a philanthropist. In his words,

“why do I need to spend 2m on drinks just to enjoy with friends in 2 hours”? This money can equally set three people up for the rest of their lives, and it can pay the school fees for some kids. There is no betterment in spending N1.5m on Gucci product or Fendi shoe that worth N800,000 but prefer to use the money to help people without any hope. He believes that helping others is when someone lives a fulfilled life”.

The actor founded the Williams Uchemba Foundation around 2017. The foundation aims to help make the world a better and happier place.

The non profit organization started with a program aimed at taking 1,000 kids out of the streets and returning them to school. The Williams Uchemba Foundation also strives to ensure that parents have the means to keep their children out of the streets in the future.

The movie star made this known via his Instagram page on Thursday, June 18, 2020, where he shared his encounter with the young man and how he came up with the decision.

According to him, he had gone shopping for furniture when he bumped into the teenager at the shop. After some conversations with him, Uchemba says he made up his mind to assist the smart young man.

“A few days ago I went to a furniture store to make some furniture for my ongoing projects and when they took me to the workshop, I saw this young man Demola who was one of the carpenters but as an apprentice…I asked him some questions and realized that he is a very smart young boy, so I invited him to my house to know more about him. He is 18 years of age, has finished secondary school (with good grades), and would love to study Economics in the University but can’t further his education because he doesn’t have a sponsor to put him through school.”

“So today I decided to adopt Demola not only to sponsor him through school but to mentor him with the knowledge and other information that has made me who I am today, till he becomes the man God destined him to be. Say hello to my new son .”

To Binge or Not to Binge Episode 83: ‘Middleditch and Schwartz’

Thomas Middleditch — known for his role in comedy series “Silicon Valley” — and Ben Schwartz — recognizable as the iconic Jean-Ralphio …

“Middleditch and Schwartz” is a unique Netflix comedy special featuring three live recordings of long-form improv shows performed by Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz. Improv comedy runs the risk of being alienating at times, but “Middleditch and Schwartz” is inclusive and inviting, with the two performers taking prompts from their in-person audience and presenting three near hour-long shows of some of the most incredible comedy I’ve watched.

Thomas Middleditch — known for his role in comedy series “Silicon Valley” — and Ben Schwartz — recognizable as the iconic Jean-Ralphio Saperstein from “Parks and Recreation” — are trained improvisers and frequent collaborators. Before the pandemic hit, the duo took their talents on tour and in partnership with Netflix, filmed three of the fully-improvised, on-the-spot shows performed at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City.

To Binge or Not to Binge

I watched the first of the shows entitled Parking Lot Wedding” on a quarantine afternoon in an effort to seek out some alone time and entertain myself. Upon finishing it, I immediately marched to the living room, stole the television remote, turned it on and forced my family to watch it with me.

Middleditch and Schwartz start all of their shows in the same way — a brief introduction followed by a prompt for the audience, “What is something you are looking forward to or dreading?” In “Parking Lot Wedding,” the two comedians weave an insane tale based on a real-life wedding party who met at a music festival together with a story of a sixth-grade romance.

The other two shows are just as intricate and impossible. In “Law School Magic,” Middleditch and Schwartz dream up nearly a dozen larger-than-life characters enrolled in a law school course whose sly professor cannot reveal the secret to their next exam. In “Dream Job,” the duo portrays two photographers who go on separate, entangled missions to attain their ideal careers while navigating the inane landscape of job applications.

I have never seen acting more impressive than Middleditch and Schwartz fully embodying so many characters, often swapping between them when one comedian has a shot of inspiration. Just keeping track of the story alone is a feat — I can’t imagine telling it as you go. My absolute favorite moments, though, are the times where you see the friends and collaborators mess with one another, throw a wrench in the gears or break character entirely to call their counterpart out. It’s riveting. It’s comical. It’s alive.

The reason I come back to this show after watching it several times with friends and family is that I haven’t yet met someone who didn’t enjoy it. Even if improv or live shows are not their preferred genre, it is a saving grace from the scrolling and deliberation that comes with opening Netflix. No matter who you are watching with, the wit and collaboration of these two hysterical men are undeniable and infectious. I will, quite literally, recommend it to any person I meet.

Best Episode

“Parking Lot Wedding” will always be my favorite for its wonderful twist of an ending where even the strangest of acting choices turns out perfectly, and its characters whose lines my family will quote to this day.

Some of entertainment’s biggest names, from Nicole Kidman to George Clooney, shared encouraging words for aspiring young creators whose organisations were collectively granted millions by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

More than $5.1 million in funds were given to over 70 nonprofit organisations during the “HFPA Philanthropy: Empowering the Next Generation” virtual event on Tuesday.

The event, formerly known as the Grants Banquet, celebrated some of the organisations with aspiring artists, filmmakers and storytellers.

“Self-expression is one of the most important ways we can connect and grow as human beings, particularly for young people,” said “Tenet” star John David Washington. “It is an instrumental part of how we view ourselves as we learn to navigate the world. For those in communities that have suffered from historic lack of representation, this is even more critical.”

Mary J. Blige, Millie Bobby Brown, Billie Eilish, Anna Kendrick, Method Man and others were among the entertainers who appeared to discuss the charities that benefit from HFPA grants. The organisation is known for putting on the Golden Globes.

Each celebrity presenter spoke for a couple minutes during the hour-long ceremony, which was hosted by James Corden. The ceremony also included a performance by Jennifer Hudson, who sang her soulful “Burden Down.”

Billy Porter’s advice to young creators was “honor your craft.” Meanwhile, Lin-Manuel Miranda suggested that aspiring filmmakers should “create what you think is missing.”

Kidman acknowledged the importance of the HFPA program and organisation’s efforts saying “the next generation of talent in our industry are important now more than ever before.”

The program will showcase recent work in film, dance, music and spoken word by students of supported schools.

“The faces and creations we see showcased to you remind us that movies and arts will not only continue to help us survive, but will also offer comfort, hope and inspiration to a world that is striving to become more just, peaceful and inclusive,” said Meher Tatna, a chair board member of the HFPA.

Salma Hayek paid homage to the Las Fotos Project, a nonprofit organisation that inspires teenage girls through photography.

“Growing up in Mexico, I have fond memories of not only finding my own creative voice, but also being inspired by my parents who stressed the importance of philanthropy,” Hayek said. “What a pleasure to highlight these young Latinas who channel their creativity through the lens of the camera and become agents of change.”

The HFPA gave a social justice grant to the Urban Peace Institute. The donation of $300,000 was given to the organisation for its diligence in the field of community safety and systems reform to end violence and mass incarceration.

Tracee Ellis Ross presented the grant to UPI founder and civil rights leader Connie Rice.

“This is a profound and deep honor,” Rice said. “The driving vision behind the Urban Peace Institute is the foundational and – first of all – human rights safety.”
