Man Utd chief Collette Roche hits out at Government over Old Trafford fan ban

Manchester United have hit out at the Government’s ongoing ban on fans at stadiums due to Covid-19.

United bosses modified Old Trafford to accommodate almost 24,000 socially distanced supporters – in the hope that crowds would be allowed back into stadiums.

United took the measures when the Government had proposed a section of fans would be allowed to return to grounds in October.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson performed a U-turn following a rise in cases of the pandemic.

The restrictions will be in place until March at the earliest, leaving huge numbers of clubs facing the threat of going bankrupt.

Manchester Airport’s deputy chief executive, Collette Roche

United have suffered a £70m drop in revenue because of the pandemic and chief operating officer Collette Roche insists the club would be able to accommodate some supporters without risk of spreading the virus.

United formulated a plan that would have seen fans arrive at Old Trafford at staggered times and be temperature tested before being allowed inside.

Roche admits she is “bemused” by the Government’s stance on the issue and she said: “We received government guidelines. I’m convinced that we would be able to (accommodate fans) safely.

“It’s quite bemusing to understand why people can gather in other settings, such as on an aeroplane or in a restaurant, or even in a cinema to watch football, when we know we’ve got the plans and the process is ready to deliver a match day here safely.

“We spent around two months working with the government guidelines to develop the right processes and measures to make sure that we can have around 23,500 people in this stadium safely social distancing.”

The continued ban on fans has left Premier League chief executive Richard Masters seething as he scrambles to find a working solution.

Some games have been made available on subscription channels at a cost of £14.95, but the move has sparked anger among fans who have refused to pay it.
