Billionaire Elon Musk is thrilled that car aficionado Jay Leno is a Tesla lover who’s confident that electric cars are the future of the auto industry.

Musk tweeted his approval of Leno’s prior remarks, when he said that the days of gasoline-fueled cars are coming to an end. “Jay Leno really knows his cars!” Musk gushed.

Leno: Tesla is very low-maintenance

Hours earlier, Leno told CNBC (video below) that gasoline-powered cars will eventually be replaced by electric cars.

Leno, the former host of the “Tonight Show,” currently stars on the CNBC show “Jay Leno’s Garage.” Season five of the weekly show premieres on Aug. 28.

Leno is an avid car collector who owns 286 vehicles. Among his favorite is the Tesla, which he bought in 2016.

Leno says what he loves about his Tesla is how low-maintenance is it.

“I have a Tesla. I’ve had it for three years. I’ve never done anything. There’s no fluids to change.”

Leno: ‘There’s almost no reason to have a gas car’

Leno predicts that a child born today “probably has as much chance of driving in a gas car as people today have been driving a car with a stick shift.”

The comedian says gasoline-fueled cars will still be around in the future, but there won’t be many of them because electric cars will render them obsolete.

Leno says Tesla has been successful because it exceeded the market’s expectations of what electric cars can do.

“[Tesla] sort of solved the battery problem. It can go 350 to 400 miles at a charge. There’s no maintenance. They’re faster than the gas car. So there’s almost no reason to have a gas car unless you’re doing long-haul duty.”

Leno: The Elon Musk haters are wack

Leno has long been a fan of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. In 2016, Leno said Musk deserved a lot of credit for entering a tough, super-competitive industry as a pioneer in the obscure electric-car market.

Leno also said he didn’t understand why Musk has so many haters since he’s building a high-quality American car in the United States that pays fair wages.

“Here’s a guy building an American car in America using American labor and paying them a union wage. Why are you not rooting for it to be successful? I don’t quite understand that.”

In 2018, Leno featured the Tesla Roadster on his CNBC show. The segment was an immediate hit.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk recently won praise from another Tesla owner for fixing a flaw after it was brought to his attention on Twitter.

As CCN reported, Musk fixed the “Dog Mode” feature after a customer complained that it almost killed his pet. The “Dog Mode” feature regulates the car’s interior temperature to keep unattended pets cool until their owner returns.

In a recent 60 Minutes interview, Tesla CEO Elon Musk found himself defending his role in the all-electric car company’s trajectory toward success. Interviewer Lesley Stahl questioned Musk in ways that brought into question several of his recent actions, which this cast a negative impression of Tesla via the questioning alone. Various media members have rallied in response to support Musk’s vision to achieve a sustainable energy economy. Jay Leno is one of these proponents of Tesla, and he recently used the platform of his weekly television show to congratulate Tesla for doing what so many other automakers lately have not been able to do — stay in business.

The YouTube segment from Leno’s show is titled, “Jay Leno Wants You to Root for Tesla.” A fast motion teleplay of an auto show sets the tone for the 1-minute YouTube video and then transitions to a parking lot holding hundreds of cars, some of which enter and exit.

During the video, Leno speaks in voiceover and before the camera.

Leno (voiceover): We live in a world now where every year you lose about 5% of the new car companies. In the mid-teens, there were 350 car companies in the United States. Every year since then, 2 or 3 of them dropped out.

Now we see Leno sitting in the foreground. His mop of light gray thick hair contrasts with his dark gray jacket and black collarless shirt. The caption in the lower left of the screen says, “‘Jay Leno’s Garage’ Host @JayLeno.” Behind him is a row of vintage automobiles. Located in a series of large hangars at the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California, Big Dog Garage is the site for his web/ TV show. In the series, Leno shares his passion for all things automotive, from classics to supercars, restoration projects to road tests.

The former host of late night comedy’s The Tonight Show, however, wasn’t feeling particularly funny about the way that Tesla has been dissed by his peers in the media.

Leno: I mean, just in my lifetime, we’ve lost (he counts on his fingers) Oldsmobile. We’ve lost Pontiac. We lost Saturn. Uh, there’s a whole bunch. I think Mercury is gone. There’s a whole bunch that just have disappeared.

As he speaks, a slideshow of classic cars appears: 1963 Oldsmobile, 1960 Pontiac, and a Saturn Vue.

Leno’s collection of about 150 cars and motorcycles — each of which is road registered — ranges from run-of-the-mill commuter cars you’d see on the road today to classic and occasionally rare specimens of elite drives. The cars are maintained by Leno and a few mechanics.

Leno: So here comes a brand new car company. [A shot of the Tesla Fremont factory takes full screen. It fades to a disembodied arm reaching to select screens on a Tesla dashboard.] So, that’s impressive — it’s a tough business to get into. [We see a cherry red Tesla which has its charging cable engaged.]

Leno: So the fact that Tesla is making a go of it — and quite successfully — is impressive. [The scene fades back to Leno talking on the set of “Garage.”] It should be applauded.

A side angle of an Elon Musk quote fills the screen: “We will not stop until every car on the road is electric.”

Leno: We’re becoming like the British. We like noble failures. [We see a backdrop of smiling people in a stadium-like setting waving red-and-white British flags and smiling]. I would watch — listen to these talk show hosts just tear the Tesla apart, and I go, “Here’s a guy that built an American car, in America, using American labor, and paying them a union wage — doing the whole bit. Why are you not rooting for it to be successful? Why do you wish it to fail? I don’t understand.”

As he speaks, a series of Tesla-based images flashes across the screen. The video ends with a baffled look crossing Leno’s face.

Media Hosts Who Love to Hate Tesla

There is no company pushing the transition to clean transport harder, faster, more convincingly, and more effectively than Tesla. The major media have often skipped acknowledgement of the fact that there is a tremendous amount of pent-up demand for clean, zero-emissions, properly designed and supported electric vehicles.

Sometimes called “The Tesla Smear,” various media celebrities and mouthpieces have attacked Tesla during its nascent history. Musk himself has at times attributed the negative media attacks to Big Oil. “Tricky situation, as Tesla doesn’t advertise, but fossil fuel companies & gas/diesel car companies are among world’s biggest advertisers.” As the link to “The Tesla Smear” above argues, it probably goes far beyond that.

Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear is one of those talk show hosts who has never been enamored of Tesla. When asked why during a Business Insider interview, Clarkson acknowledged the reason is that he “will never be a fan of plug-in electric cars. You have brown-outs in New York already when you have people charging (phones) up and running lights. America is barely coping with its demand for electricity. Same in Britain. We’re 5%, and you’re 16% under here in the US. So, when people start charging their cars up, where’s the power going to come?” That is a concern that those in the utility industry and beyond have emphasized is unwarranted fear-mongering. Is that really why Clarkson doesn’t like plug-in cars? Maybe. Or maybe he is bothered by the transition for other reasons.

Clarkson spoke of the need, instead, for another alternative to internal combustion engine cars. “We must have fuel cell cars. The world has to have them.” He should probably check out our own Kyle Field’s and Zach Shahan’s exposés on hydrogen vs. electric power, just to be sure.

What’s Behind All the Tesla Negative Press?

Michael Barnard, strategist for TFIE Strategy and regular contributor here on CleanTechnica,agrees that “Tesla and Elon Musk are having a terrible time getting basic, neutral, balanced press coverage.” Tesla’s Model 3 production rate, he says, has been “faster than any new model car in history,” and its record number of $1,000 pre-orders has been largely overlooked as well.

Barnard goes on to highlight that the company is outselling its competitors in North America and Europe. Tesla continues to win raving reviews from teardown analysts and test drivers. “[Its Autopilot] features continue to be the best of any production vehicles.” Its market capitalization is 10 times what it was 5 years ago. “In a normal world,” Barnard notes, “this string of successes would lead to incredibly positive coverage.”

Multiple overlapping challenges have led to this situation, according to Barnard.

  • The big hitters are an anti-electric car PR campaign by elements of the fossil fuel industry.
  • Anti-Tesla PR campaigns are led by firms which are shorting TSLA stock.
  • Legacy and new media see Tesla as a threat and are nervous about reduced revenue and increased costs.

“Aggressive and sophisticated PR campaigns such as the Koch brothers” have sowed disinformation to media desperate for content, sources, breaking news, and headlines that sell eyeballs. Tesla, Barnard concludes, has fallen right in the middle of the proverbial crosshairs.

Dave Habiger is a serial CEO who’s led companies through rapid growth and IPOs, two skills he’ll put to use as the new boss at J.D. Power — not that his experience will persuade his friend Jay Leno to buy the stock, but more on that later.

Habiger, an adviser to Pritzker Group Venture Capital LLC and Silver Lake Management LLC, was named the new chief executive officer of J.D. Power on Wednesday. He’s taking an undisclosed stake in the closely held market research and data analytics firm and intends to take the minimum compensation, a fact that supports the idea he will take the XIO Group-owned company public rather quickly.

The timing of a likely initial public offering will depend on what the market is like a year from now, Habiger said in an interview. In the meantime, he sees opportunities to grow the consumer-oriented parts of what has historically been a business-to-business organization. He replaces Finbarr O’Neill, who is retiring after a decade at J.D. Power.

“We’ll be looking at rapid growth in both the existing market research and data, as well as applying that brand to other consumer-facing initiatives and offerings,” Habiger said, noting a planned focus on acquisitions. “For a business that doesn’t actually sell to the consumer, it’s amazing how strong the brand is.”

Habiger, 49, has a lot of experience selling companies to the public or to another business. He took consumer software company Sonic Solutions public before selling it to Rovi Corp., which later merged with TiVo. He filed for an IPO of NDS Group and instead sold it to Cisco Systems Inc. for $5 billion. As CEO of Textura, he sold the cloud-services company to Oracle Corp.

He also has some skills under the hood. He used to convert cars from gas-burning to electric-powered, including Porsche sports cars. Elon Musk, who Habiger said once considered hiring him as Tesla’s CEO, asked for one, but others had already made deposits and production was slow.

Habiger’s experience with big data and software, more so than his longtime interest in electric cars, should help accelerate J.D. Power’s growth and make its value evident to investors, said Martin Eberhard, a Tesla co-founder.

“Digitizing is a first step,” he said in a telephone interview. “The next step is to really figure out how to monetize what you’ve digitized.”

Habiger’s car knowledge also helped him hit it off with Jay Leno, when both were presenting at an awards ceremony. The friendship was sealed when Habiger’s father, an engineer and entrepreneur, let Leno have a fuel filter for his Model T Ford that the senior Habiger had designed for his own father’s Model A.

Leno said he’s glad to see that J.D. Power’s new boss is someone who would “understand why people would buy a Mustang when the backseat isn’t as big as an SUV’s.”

But he’s not interested in the IPO, even for a solid brand under a proven CEO. Leno said he’s hyper-conservative with investments and sees even so-called “minimal-risk” ones as too dangerous. “I work and my money relaxes,” he said.

    Elon Musk received significant criticism, in the early days for his electric cars, but as Jay Leno points out, fully 5 percent of all auto manufacturers go out of business yearly. Even the biggest companies like Ford and Chevrolet have struggled from time to time. Tesla has been harshly criticized along the way, but despite it all, Elon Musk succeeded in creating a desirable electric car.

    Jay Leno is calling out Elon Musk’s critics, saying people are eager to “tear Tesla apart.” Jay Leno wants to know why so many people are critical of Elon Musk and his electric cars.

    Jay Leno makes a good point. Why would people want Elon Musk to fail with Tesla? Even if Tesla electric cars aren’t on everyone’s wish list yet, why are people eager for Tesla to fail?

    After all, as Jay Leno points out, Elon Musk is hiring American workers, developing new technology, and helping the economy. The success of Tesla is a win not only for the environment but also for the American economy.

    The Jay Leno video shows that Elon Musk borrowed $465 million but after some dire predictions from the camp of naysayers, Elon Musk surprised everyone when Tesla paid off that loan ten years early. Tesla stock is strong as well according to the video below.

    Elon Musk was criticized at first because the public underestimated the power of an electric car. Elon Musk is proving them wrong with fast, powerful Tesla cars and trucks that can now outperform their gas-powered counterparts. Few could have foreseen what Tesla has become.

    In the same spirit as Jay Leno, the Financial Review explains how the writer, Vivek Wadhwa, who owns a Tesla S and has a Model 3 on order, feels about Elon Musk’s electric cars.

    “I have referred to my Tesla Model S as ‘a spaceship that travels on land’. It drives differently from any other kind of car and is lightning fast, smooth and slick. To me, other electric vehicles, such as the BMW i3, the Mercedes B-Class, the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Bolt, all of which I have driven, seem by comparison to be a clumsy repackaging of old technologies.”

    Jay Leno points out Elon Musk’s success, and the Financial Review agrees, stating that Tesla is so much more than a car, and the Tesla company so much more than a car company. Tesla is also an energy company, offering the Powerwall for home electricity storage, as well as grid-scale battery storage systems.

    Tesla is also on the brink of creating a completely autonomous, self-driving vehicle. Even more exciting, many Tesla vehicles built now will have the capacity to upgrade easily to become self-driving, autonomous vehicles.

    While Elon Musk’s success with Tesla was far from a sure bet, Jay Leno makes a point that Musk and Tesla deserve well-earned praise.
